FFOTM hosts a great contra dance on the first Saturday evening (usually) of the month from 7:30 until 11:00.  Join us on the hardwood floors of the lovely Ashurst/Old Main Hall on the campus of Northern Arizona University.  Contra dancing is a fine way to spend a Saturday evening! The dances are fun and the break time offers the beautiful trees and green grass of the Old Main campus.  There is instruction given before each dance, and basic contra dance moves are taught at 7:30.  Come alone or bring a friend.  View the NAU North Campus Map (Buildings 10 and 11 on the map.) Everyone is welcome!  Suggested donation is $5.00 for NAU Students and FFOTM members, and $8.00 for non-members.  We will honor the "Rissa Pass" for first-time contra-dancers. First Saturday Contra Dance News by Kari Usher Greetings!  We would love to see you at the first Saturday contra dance.  Folks are beginning to travel to other towns for dancing too.  Carpools are getting together and making it an adventure: first Friday to Prescott, third Saturday to Cottonwood, 2nd Saturday to Phoenix, 4th Wednesday to Phoenix.  So if you have the hankering to travel and dance there are ways to take care of that.  May 3rd Updraft , one of our local bands will provide the tunes **All students get in free with their school ID to dance off those exam-cramming stress lines.  June 7th Claire Zucker from Tucson will call to the Just Desserts.  July 5th The Privy Tippers will come up from Tucson with their antics and great music. Caller TBA. So make your plans.  Reserve dates with your friends and come on out to the first Saturday Contra Dances. We are planning some more demos from other dance groups here in town so you can see what else is going on out there.  If you are involved with a group that you would like to bring into the contra dance contact Kari at 525-2513.  So far the Casino Rueda demos have been very fun. Main Street in Old Town Cottonwood.  From I-17, Exit #287 to Cottonwood on Hwy 260, left on Hwy 89A to the Civic Center.   Dances are preceded by a potluck dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 at the hall, with a pre-dance lesson from 6:30 - 7:00 and dance from 7:00 - 10:00. $5 per dancer. Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music invites you to your first contra dance in honor of Rissa Miller. Our dear friend, Rissa Miller, was passionate about getting new people to try contra dancing.  Her husband, Warren, sent us The Rissa Pass shortly after a wonderful celebration of her life with the hope to continue to serve that purpose. Warren wrote: "You may print as many as you want, cut and fold them, and give them to people with an invitation to try contra dancing. The pass includes information about when dances take place in Prescott, Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Tucson, and web sites that give more information. If any dance community finds that the number of Rissa Passes presented becomes a problem, I will be glad to reimburse the dance groups for Rissa Passes used to attend dances. For people outside of Arizona, I urge you to try presenting the Rissa Pass in other parts of the country. I will make the same guarantee, but I suspect that many dance organizations will be happy to honor the Pass for first time contra dancers."
