Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music (FFOTM)
is very excited to invite the community of Flagstaff to participate in the Young Jammers Program.
This program encourages local citizens who may
have old or unused musical stringed instruments (fiddles, banjos, guitars, basses, mandolin, or dulcimers) sitting
in their closets or attics to dig them out and donate them. These instruments will be distributed to youth between
the ages of 9 and 17 who want to play music.
The focus is to facilitate a true love of music
in those young people who have a real desire to play. Regular, FREE workshops will be held at the Coconino Center
for the Arts for the aspiring musicians so they can share music with local musicians.
The Young Jammers program is directed by Christina
Boyd and Lloyd Holdeman.
FFOTM members would like to provide opportunities
for youth to acquire and learn to play a musical instrument. This will both enrich the lives of the young folk
involved and allow local musicians and FFOTM members to share their passion for music, passing on their joy of
traditional music to a new generation.

Young Jammer Sophia Rechel receives a 3/4-size fiddle
from violinmaker Jeffrey
Robinson.
The fiddle was purchased with donated funds.

How You Can Help
Current instrument owners are asked to donate their old or used instruments to the cause of inspiring and nurturing
the musical talent of our youth. Instruments in good condition will be picked up. Please call Christina Boyd at
928-522-9269 to make arrangements.
If an instrument has a unique history or story associated with it, please include a typed copy along with contact
name and phone number so we may thank you.
Items we need for
our Young Jammers
1. Instruments: Guitars, (especially small guitars) fiddles, banjos, mandolins,
dulcimers, dobros, and stand up basses with cases if possible. These are gifts of love, and they are given to the
Young Jammers Program unconditionally. We will maintain them, keep track of them and get them to folks who want
to play them.
2. Tuners and metronomes: Cedar Music (779-0799) is making it possible to purchase tuners and metronomes at a discount and donate
them to the Young Jammers Program.
3. Strings often musicians change strings before they wear
out their current sets. If your used strings still have some life in them, please use masking tape to label each
string (i.e. "G-B" = guitar, B-string, or "M-D" = Mandolin, D string), circle them up and mail
them to:
Young Jammers,
6025 N. Snowflake Dr.
Flagstaff, AZ 86004.
(This is a good excuse to keep fresh strings on
your instrument.)
5. Money - If you are inclined to contribute, we are grateful. It will be used for instrument repair,
strings, and other unexpected expenses that are certain to arise. Make checks payable to FFOTM and mail c/o Christina
Boyd, 4300 E. Winter Dr. Flagstaff, AZ 86004.
All donations are tax
deductible.
6. Method Books and Videos
all musicians are self-taught.
Books and videos are valuable learning aids. If you have something to contribute, call Christina 522-9269, or email
Lloyd at Lloyd@infomagic.net. We will establish a lending library for the Young Jammers.
7. Volunteer musicians to help at the workshops

The History of the Young Jammers
Program
How it all got started
FFOTM has partnered with the Flagstaff Cultural
Partners to offer this program to young folk throughout the Flagstaff community. The program kicked off officially
on October 26, 2003 when Second Harvest transformed their regular Sunday night gig at Charly’s into a very successful
Tribute to Johnny Cash and a benefit for the Young Jammers Program. The music began with a family show from 6-8pm
with wonderful music and stories from Tony Norris, Jim DeBlois and others. The over 21 crowd (and it was a crowd!)
stayed on to enjoy several other musicians honoring Johnny Cash and spreading the word about the Young Jammers
Program. Our thanks to Brian DeMarco
of Second Harvest, to all the fine performers, and to all those who attended and made the night great fun and a
great success.
Friday, January 30,
2004, during the FFOTM Annual Benefit
Concert for the Coconino Center for the Arts, instruments went on display at the Coconino Center for the Arts.
This concert is the annual fundraiser sponsored by FFOTM to support the Coconino Center for the Arts. Three popular
local bands donated their music for this benefit: The Burnett Family (with some Young Jammers of their own!), Four
Wheels Down, and Desperate Measures.
February 1 – February
20, 2004 Young Jammers instrument display
and drawing entry continued at the Coconino Center for the Arts
Future Young Jammers viewed the donated instruments, made their selection, and entered their name for the instrument
of their choice at CCA during the first three weeks in February.
Saturday, February 21,
2004 The planned drawing wasn't needed
as every young person who entered received an instrument to begin their musical future! There was a gathering of
donors and Young Jammers to get the ball rolling.
Saturday, February 28,
2004 The first workshop was held at
the Coconino Center for the Arts and the fun began!
